After sudden crying without any reason for three days-- we found that he wants Annie hugs him and rocks him to sleep-- he starts to recognize people and build his own routines?

We took of his mittens today. He is trying to grasp the dancing monkey mounted above his crib.
Last week of Oct-First week of Nov 2010
Due to Tina's unexpected rash (peak: a visit of Saint Vincent ER on Oct 31 Sunday), I am now taking care of the baby's bath for a few days until Tina comes back. Leonard now is more responsive to my smile. I squeezes a smile, and he follows one. I do one, and he does one! What a boy! Does he understand the underlying social meaning of a smile? Or it's simply a biological imitation of my behavior? Will need to find out soon. Anyway, when I cuddle him and touch him over him, he seems content. He bursts into a smile when I scratch his cheek, in particular under the chin around the neck. (by M)
(That is called social smile-- He starts to smile at us during the 8th week. He grins and giggled during sleeping from the 4th week, but these were merely the reflex. A short summary about "smile" from Your Baby's First Year:... he learned that people entertain him, sooth him, feed him, and make him comfortable. He feels good when people smiled at him and he seems to know instinctively that he can smile, too.... He suddenly discovers that just by moving his lips he can have "two-way" conversation with you... Smiling also gives him another way besides crying to express his needs and exert some control over what happens to him... Here comes what's important: by quickly responding and enthusiastically to his smiles and engaging him often in these conversations, you'll let him know that he's important to you, that he can trust you, and that he has a certain amount of control in his life... These two days, Leonard cries frantically without stopping. With the cry so loud and long, to the extend that his voice becoming coarse, he demands us so much. Wikipedia says this is colic---a mysterious confusing word. Never heard before. I am worried. Tina is sick (rash and blisters on her arms and legs). Worried very much if Taikun is sick, in particular this is flu season.
Hope Taikun stays warm and healthy. (by M)
( I don't think this is colic-- colic, by general understanding and per Dr. Barber, is crying maliciously for over three hours a day, and more than three days in one week-- Annie and I both think the reason he cried is because I cannot nurse him or hold him-- he misses mommy's hug, and couldn't understand why I refused him. When I went to hospital along yesterday, he probably thought I'd never return-- he lost some sense of security and cried very hard. Nov 11 2010. Tina called me, saying that Taikun is fixated at the aquarium. Yes, I have found that he seems to be very interested in the aquarium in recent 2 weeks. When I push him around in the cart, he seems to rest assured in front of the aquarium. Tina is surprised that Taikun was so concentrated at the aquarium and was reluctant to leave. He started to cry when Tina moved him away. A bit worried about this----hope this has nothing to do with the any abnormality.
Jan 8 2011- Taikuns knows to voice himself for attention. His voices become various, including different variations of ahhh, mmmm, umm, hei--a!(high pitch). He also closes his lips light, inwardly making a line (when upset or expressing something). Sometimes, this follows an attempt to make a sound of "bo", short and acute.
Jan 10 2011- Taikun now knows to grab things, including all things on his bed. He also once grab the string of a spinning toy (making music when the spring is tighten) to turn the stuff on.
Jan 20 2011: Taikun is sick ,fisrt time to ER.. Noticed that he can remove the pacifier from the mouth, holding it, and then accurately putting it back his mouth again. Also, his ability to hold himself on elbows facing down is getting better. Now he can maintain this gesture for about 3-4 minutes!
Feb 1 2011: Taikun becomes more masterful holding the pacifier. He is able to hold it and put it back to the mouth. Though sometimes unable to position it precisely where the mouth is, he is able to hold it waving, and then release (dropping!) it. He is able to open his mouth to receive a pacifier given--when the pacifier is lifted (to tease him), he also raise the mouth to adjust to the change. What a good boy!
Feb 20 2011: Just passed his 6-month. He is allowed to start solid food--we use organic brown rice (from Gerber). Though spitting it after fed, he at least can have it if mixed with formula in a bottle. He is now able to wake for 2.5 -3 hour before needing a sleep (in comparison with 1.5-2 hour of wake time before).
March 3 2011: Now Taikun looks a one-year-old boy, no more a baby---which is commented by Dr Barber. Able to roll back from tunmy to sideway. Annie said that, he was able to roll from face-up, to sideway, and to tummy yesterday, unassisted. Though it took so long for him to complete this, I am so happy that he is able to do this, showing he is making physical mobility somehow.
He has also been on brown rice (powder mixed with formula) for about two weeks, though just one or two spoon in first few days. Today, he just passed his first solid stool, like adult's. No more soupy or watery style, now it's long solids. Amount is quite a lot. Color is yellow, no more green. Annie helped him to finish the entire process by widening his bottoms. After passing this first adult-style droppings, he fell asleep around 12:30pm (noon). Would this be a milestone? Hope is!
March 5 2011. Taikun is very fuzzy, perhaps as a result of the cold. He even cries with eyes closed in sleep this afternoon. Annie has reported once this experience, using "having a nightmare" to describe this oddity. I am very worried too. He doesn't eat formula well, becoming panic and screaming with tears. Tears a lot as if two tap water faucets are on his face. Hope we will get over this soon.
March 22 2011. When sent to daycare, Taikun was found able to turn to tummy position from a sitting position. He was put on a U-shaped pillow in a sitting position first. Upon seeing a toy on the floor, he kicked away the pillow, tilted forward and touched the ground sideways, before turning to the standard tummy position. What a boy!
March 24 2011. Taikun doesn't seem to very diligent in mobility. T and I are not atheletic since young. I still remember how sad I was when I was the last one in the rally in the annual games of elementary school (Kuting). I tried very hard, but just couldn't run fast. Recently a doctor said it's due to Asberg's symdrone, which worries me very much. Would Taikun pick up this problem?
Lord, please do not do that. Let him grow happily and healthily, and in particular, sporty!

April 7 2011. He somehow can roll over---not entirely. Due to huge size of the arm, his torso cannot land on tummy since there is still one arm tucked underneath. This is some progress!
April 10 2011. Now 7-month-old, he is only suitable for 18-month-old clothes. How big he is! Brought him to shopping mall in two cosecutive days. After returning, his cheeks and ears are found swollen. (is it mumps?) Temperature: 100 F. Fever again, shortly after a previous cold, after a 10-day history of taking antibiotics. Tomorrow an another visit to pediatrician. Light yellow nasal discharge. Often scratch his ears. Shakes head very frequently and violently. Cry and fuzzy. Short sleep---unable to sleep well. Need to check if PSELC is associated with higher illness possibility---I feel Taikun is sick everyday. Should we put him to daycare this early?
April 14 2011. According to Annie, Taikun sleeps for approx. 14 hours a day. Tonight, he has the temperature again, at 101F. So he is fed with Tylenol again. Geez----why he has been sick at all times?
April 21, 2011. Thursday. Annie returned from Maryland and just arrived home. Taikun greets her with his most splendid smiles--or laughter to her. He chuckles and giggles, communicating to her with the message "welcome back and I am very happy to see you." Also tonight, is a significant night since this is the first time Taikun turns over. From facing up to completely tummy! So tonight is really a day worth of noting. Time to buy a videocamera to record all of these!
April 23 2011. Since six-month-old, Taikun started solid food other than formula. Now, a collection of food has been tried, including brown rice (Gerber), cereal (packed food from Gerber), and fresh pureed broccoli, pea/ peapods, greenbeans, banana, and apple. Today we tried two new things---pureed hard-boiled egg (Yuck!), and sweet potato (mmmm--okay.) Hope we can proceed to meat soon. Now, the point is not to add any condiments, including salt. Of course, since flavor preference is acquired, we have to be careful not to develop any dependency on additives for health reasons. I think the variety of food is part of the plan to allow him to get to know this great world.
April 27 2011 Just returned from Toronto and Niagara Falls with Yuhong. Taikun today started his solid food carnivore---pureed meat and animal-based protein! Annie prepared some pork rib and yolk. He appeared to be a bit reluctant eating them due to this is the first time, as expected. Hope he will get used to these new kinds soon!
May 2 2011. A bad news day. After returning home, when seeing Taikun's cute and naivete face, I sudden forgot all the sadness and pain. Thank you my son! I will try my best to raise and love you until you grow up. Encourage me to grow along with you. I love you!

2011 May 6. Taikun now babbles very clearly: “ya ya ya ya.” He is great fun when babbling! He also shows some clear personability now--a high and loud "Ah!" showing protest or displeasure. He also turns over very quickly: from lying facing-up to tummy. When in a sitting position, he tends to move forward. When in a tummy position, he tends to move backwards—not quite getting the skill of crawling, which is forward.
2011 May 8. Had a fever again and ate twice tylenol.Seemed to be better this morning after waking up. He gained the energy back, babbling "Aa da da da da da..." How cute and lovely he is! No wonder Tina often says this: " [so cute] that ....cannot help to bite him."
Planned to bring him to a hiking activity, but changed the idea since he is yet recovered from the cold. Still bring him to the church service, after a long pause.

2011 May 12, Thursday: Teething: When being bathed, Taikun was found by Tina that two “pointed objects”are felt on lower rim of his mouth. Bravo! Also, Taikun babbles more syllables: “dou/da dou/da dou/da…” Also, he is able to pronounce more complicated syllables such as "ma ma ma..."
Have not updated a while...amazing developments are undergoing in recent months.

Taikun claps his hands when being prompted to (in both Taiwanese and Mandarin). He learns this very well.
Also, he knows to "sai-nai" after meeting difficulty. E.g., he crawls to Annie and Grandma for their comfort after being accidentally hit by the door or a toy. It hurts so "sai-nai" is a must after protesting being hurt by these objects.
